Malaysia to Offer Visa-Free Entry to Indians and Chinese Starting December 1

Malaysia is set to abolish visa requirements for Indian and Chinese citizens from December 1, allowing them to enjoy visa-free entry for up to 30 days, as announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. However, the entry will be subject to security screening measures. This decision positions Malaysia as the fourth country, following Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Thailand, to welcome tourists with visa-free access.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the economic benefits of this move during a speech at his People’s Justice Party’s annual congress, expressing confidence in increased tourist arrivals and their subsequent contribution to economic growth. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s broader strategy, as Anwar had previously unveiled plans to enhance visa facilities in the coming year, with a particular focus on attracting tourists and investors from India and China.
Vietnam, having recently seen positive trends in its tourism sector, echoed a similar sentiment. Nguyn Van Jung, Vietnam’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, advocated for short-term visa waivers for significant markets such as China and India to bolster the recovery of the country’s tourism industry. Currently, Vietnam allows visa-free travel for nationals of select European countries.
Thailand had also taken steps to attract more tourists, as announced in October. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavision revealed a visa-free entry policy for Indian and Taiwanese tourists for a period of six months, starting from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. This move was motivated by the popularity of Thailand as a travel destination among people from these regions.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has approved a proposal to grant free visas to travelers from seven countries, including India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, and Indonesia. This initiative, in effect until March 31, 2024, is aimed at bolstering tourist arrivals and achieving a target of five million visitors in the coming years.
These visa policy changes across multiple Asian countries signal a regional focus on tourism as a driver for economic recovery and growth.
