News Highlights
- NCERT has revised the Class 12 History curriculum by eliminating the chapters pertaining to the Mughal Empire.
- This will result in changes in the syllabus of all boards including CBSE, UP and other state boards that follow NCERT syllabus.
- The new syllabus will be effective from the academic year 2023-24.
Class 12 students of UP Board and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will no longer study Mughal history, as the NCERT has removed related topics from the “Themes of Indian History-Part II” textbook. Similarly, topics like “Central Islamic lands,” “Confrontation of cultures,” and “The Industrial Revolution” have been removed from the Class 11 textbook “Themes In World History.” The changes are part of the new rationalized syllabus to be taught in the academic session 2023-24.
Previously, Class 12 students learned about Mughal rulers and their empires, manuscripts, illustrations, ideal states, courts, titles, gifts, bureaucracy, elite, and borders. The removed chapters also included questioning formal religion. Lessons on “US hegemony in world politics” and “The Cold War Era” has been completely dropped from the Class 12 civics textbook.
Chapters like “Rise of popular movements” and “Era of one-party dominance” has also been omitted from the textbook “Politics in India since Independence” taught to Class 12 students.
Lessons on “Democracy and diversity,” “Popular struggles and movement,” and “Challenges to democracy” have also been removed from the Class 10 textbook “Democratic Politics-II.”
UP Board secretary Divyakant Shukla confirmed the new rationalized syllabus of classes 10, 11, and 12, stating that the NCERT has provided subject-wise rationalized syllabus links for the academic session 2023-24 on the UP Board’s official website. He added that books published according to the new syllabus are now available in the market.
Deputy CM of UP defended the removal of history chapters from the syllabus, stating that it should not be linked to elections. He also claimed that the new curriculum will change the outlook of children and that the nation will benefit from the end of politics based on appeasement, casteism, and familyism.
