Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra to miss Commonwealth Games 2022 due to injury
In a major setback to India’s Commonwealth Games hopes, Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has confirmed that he will miss the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham due to a groin injury sustained during the recently held World Athletics Championships. Where he won the historic silver medal. The Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 is to be held from 28 July to 8 August.

IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said the reigning Olympic champion has been advised a month’s rest. “Neeraj Chopra will not participate in the Commonwealth Games 2022. He is not fit as he was injured in the final of the World Athletic Championship,” Rajeev Mehta said.
“Team India’s javelin thrower Mr. Neeraj Chopra called me from the US today expressing his inability to participate in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games due to fitness concerns,” Mehta said. “After attending the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Mr. Chopra had an MRI scan on Monday, and based on that, he was advised a month’s rest by his medical team,” Mehta said. Neeraj was expected to be India’s flag bearer at the Games, starting 28 July.
“We have a meeting later in the day to decide the new flag-bearer,” India team’s chef de mission Rajesh Bhandari told PTI. If we look Neeraj’s past performance, he made an impressive comeback in the competition after Tokyo 2020, breaking the national record with a throw of 89.30m to take silver at the Pavo Nurmi Games and then again with a throw of 89.94m to finish second in the Stockholm Diamond League 2022 (Sweden) broke the national record.
His absence is a major setback for Team India in the upcoming Commonwealth Games as Chopra was one of the strongest contenders for India’s gold medal at the Games. He was set to come up against Peters (Grenadian athlete) once again at the Commonwealth Games but will now miss an opportunity to defend his title this year.
