Netflix, the global streaming giant, has implemented a new policy to tackle password sharing in India. To address this issue, the company has started sending emails to its customers in the country, reiterating that Netflix accounts should be used exclusively within a single household.
In an official statement, Netflix explained, “Starting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in India.”
The company emphasized that a Netflix account is intended for use by one household, allowing all members living in that household to access Netflix content wherever they are – be it at home, on the go, or while on holiday. Furthermore, Netflix introduced new features like “Transfer Profile” and “Manage Access and Devices” to enhance the viewing experience for users.
Acknowledging the multitude of entertainment choices available to its members, Netflix affirmed its commitment to investing heavily in a diverse range of new films and TV shows. This way, regardless of personal preferences, language, or the company one keeps while watching, there will always be something satisfying to watch on Netflix.
Earlier in May of this year, Netflix applied similar restrictions on password-sharing in more than 100 countries, including prominent markets like the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil.
For paying customers in these regions, Netflix offered the option to include an additional member from outside their household for an extra monthly fee of $8 (₹660) in the United States. To ensure a seamless experience, members were granted the capability to transfer a person’s profile, enabling them to maintain their viewing history and personalized recommendations.
These measures come as Netflix continues to explore different strategies and policies to combat the widespread practice of account sharing, which is estimated to involve over 100 million households globally. As of March, Netflix reported a subscriber base of 232.5 million paying customers worldwide.
