Russian President Vladimir Putin lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the Make in India program during his speech at the 8th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) held in Vladivostok. Putin emphasized the importance of domestic automobile production and cited India as a prime example of successful policy implementation in this regard.
Addressing a media query concerning Russian-made cars, Putin expressed his admiration for India’s efforts, stating, “Prime Minister Modi is doing the right thing in promoting the Make in India program. He is right.” He highlighted that India has set an example by prioritizing the manufacturing and use of domestically-produced vehicles.
Reflecting on the historical absence of Russian-made cars, Putin acknowledged the disparity in luxury when compared to brands like Mercedes and Audi, which were prevalent in Russia during the 1990s. However, he stressed that the focus should be on emulating India’s approach towards domestically-manufactured vehicles.
Furthermore, Putin reassured that using Russian-made automobiles would not violate any WTO obligations and suggested implementing guidelines for different classes of officials to use domestically-produced cars.
In addition to discussing the automotive industry, Putin also expressed support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). He asserted that the project would benefit Russia’s logistics and dismissed any potential hindrances to Russia arising from the involvement of the United States and other countries.
The IMEC project, initiated by India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and other partners, aims to establish a major shipping and railway connectivity corridor between India, the Middle East, and Europe. It was officially announced on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, and Prime Minister Modi welcomed this historic agreement as a significant step towards economic integration between India, South Asia, and Europe.
In conclusion, Putin’s commendation of Prime Minister Modi’s Make in India initiative highlights the global significance of India’s manufacturing policies, while his endorsement of the IMEC project underscores the potential for increased economic cooperation between nations.
