The Quad summit, originally scheduled to be held in Sydney next week, has been cancelled by Australia. This decision came after US President Joe Biden postponed his visit due to domestic issues in the United States. Biden had also cancelled his visits to Australia and Papua New Guinea, but he is still expected to attend the G7 summit over the weekend.
Instead of the Quad summit in Sydney, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that he would meet with the leaders of India, Japan, and the US at the G7 summit in Japan. He informed reporters during a press conference that the Quad leaders’ meeting would now take place in Japan.
The Quad, consisting of the US, India, Japan, and Australia, was established in 2017 as a response to China’s increasing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Although India and Australia are not part of the G7 group, they have been invited to participate in the summit in Hiroshima, Japan, from May 19 to May 21.
Anthony Albanese expressed his gratitude to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for the invitation to the G7 summit and acknowledged the importance of having discussions with the leaders there.
Albanese revealed that he had spoken with Joe Biden earlier in the day, and the US President expressed disappointment at not being able to attend the now-cancelled Quad summit. He mentioned that a bilateral program with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Sydney is still expected to proceed, but he did not provide any information regarding the potential visit of his Japanese counterpart to Sydney.
What is Quad Summit?

It is a forum for high-level discussions and cooperation among these nations, particularly regarding security, regional stability, and addressing common challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad Summit provides an opportunity for the leaders to strengthen their strategic partnerships, enhance cooperation, and promote a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
