In October, Akasa Air received approval from the civil aviation ministry to begin commercial operations. “We can now confirm refined predictions on our timelines as we come closer to the airline’s start date. We anticipate receiving our first aircraft in early June 2022, with plans to begin commercial operations in July 2022 “Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube told PTI news agency.
By the end of March 2023, Akasa Air expects to operate 18 aircraft across domestic routes in the country, with a focus on the metro to tier-2 and tier-3 cities, according to the company. Akasa Air will operate a fleet of brand new 737 MAX planes powered by the highly fuel-efficient CFM LEAP B engine, giving it the country’s youngest and greenest fleet. The company agreed to a $9 billion deal with Boeing to purchase 72 Boeing 737 Max planes in two variants: the 737-8 and the 737-8-200.
“Providing the lowest seat-mile costs for a single-aisle airplane as well as high dispatch reliability and an enhanced passenger experience, the 737 Max is one of the strategic factors that will give Akasa Air a competitive edge in its dynamic home market,” the statement said. The airline has kept its tagline ‘it’s your sky’ because it guarantees the cheapest ride in the country. The brand wants to create an inclusive environment for all Indian flyers, regardless of their social-economic background.
The airline will resume operations at a time when the country’s aviation industry is slowly recovering from the devastating effects of the Covid outbreak, it will be interesting to see how Akasa Air attracts Indians when Jet Airways is also planning big.
