Maharashtra will reopen schools in rural areas for students in classes 5-7 on August 17, according to state Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad. The state government will reopen schools in cities for Classes 8 to 12 while following the COVID19 protocol, according to the minister.
Classes for 5 to 7 will resume in rural areas where classes 8 to 12 have already begun. Physical classes for students 8 to 12 would be reintroduced first in urban areas where none have been previously offered, according to Varsha Gaikwad.
Schools would be opened only in places with consistently low Covid infection rates, Varsha Gaikwad added, adding that committees will be formed for each area to decide whether or not to open schools for various classes.
In districts with low infection rates, classes for 7 to 12 are already permitted. The majority of these districts are located in the Vidarbha and Marathwada states. However, due to the larger number of Covid cases in urban areas like Mumbai and Pune, this exemption was not extended.
The state opened over 6,000 schools in rural areas for 8 to 12 last month. In rural areas where Covid-19 cases were not being detected, at least 5,947 schools have resumed offline classes for 8 to 12.
In the state, there are a total of 19,997 secondary and higher secondary schools, with 45,07,445 students 8 to 12. Vikas Garad, deputy director of the state council of educational research and training, said that 5,947 schools in rural areas reopened.
Kolhapur had the most school reopenings, with 940, followed by Aurangabad (631), Yavatmal (502), and Jalna (447).
The Maharashtra government eased Covid restrictions in 14 districts on August 2nd. Following a reduction in Covid-19 cases and recent relaxations offered for shops and other enterprises, parents of students from many Maharashtra districts have demanded the reopening of primary schools and those from Classes V to VII.
