Elon Musk‘s Tesla is reportedly getting ready to launch in India, where four of the electric carmaker’s models have been approved.
Tesla’s vehicles have been recognized as safe and roadworthy in India, according to a post on the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ website. According to the website, these tests guarantee that the vehicle meets Indian market criteria for emissions, safety, and roadworthiness.
The company is said to be testing the Model 3 in India, with the company’s entry-level car spotted in Maharashtra in camouflage. According to a file with the Registrar of Companies in Karnataka, Tesla has also registered its India branch as Tesla India Motors (RoC).
According to rumors, the four vehicles accepted by the authorities could include two Model 3 and Model Y variants, although no official confirmation has yet been given.
When these electric cars arrive in India, they will face competition from the Tata Nexon EV and Tigor EV, as well as the Audi e-Tron, MG ZS EV, and various models from Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and other manufacturers.
It seems questionable that gaining a foothold in the Indian market will be easy. According to a Bloomberg estimate, electric vehicles account for only 1% of annual car sales in the nation. Tesla automobiles are prohibitively expensive. Furthermore, charging infrastructure is still insufficient. The absence of funding for companies who wish to create electric vehicles has also hampered the transition to electric vehicles.
The tax regime, however, is likely to be Tesla’s largest stumbling obstacle. Elon Musk had previously stated that India had the highest import tariffs in the world. He claims that India treats electric vehicles the same as petrol cars, which contradicts the country’s climate goals.
Earlier reports in the media said that the company has partnered with three Indian auto component suppliers, including Sona Comstar, Sandhar Technologies, and Bharat Forge, to produce parts such as windshields, sub-assemblies, instrument panels, and other items.
Elon Musk, indicated earlier this month that the business is open to build manufacturing in India if demand for its electric cars is strong.
