The Impact of Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ on the Monsoon: Insights from IMD
Written by Sanjay Kumar
Despite hindering the onset of the monsoon in Kerala in recent days, the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy‘ is unlikely to have a significant impact on the monsoon’s arrival in India. As the storm continues along its path, it is expected to pass between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan, near Jakhau Port, on Thursday evening, June 15th.
Rather than impeding the monsoon’s progress, the cyclone has actually aided its advancement across the southern regions of the peninsula. By intensifying the cross-equatorial flow over the Arabian Sea, the storm has helped the monsoon progress. However, the cyclone has now completely separated from the monsoonal flow, resulting in no significant influence on the monsoon’s progress or performance.
According to meteorologists, the cyclone is anticipated to reach maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 150 kmph. As a result, several states are expected to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted prolonged rainfall along the coastal areas of Gujarat from June 14 to 16. Additionally, from June 16 to 18, there is a possibility of very heavy rains occurring near the border between Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The India Meteorological Department bulletin stated that the very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy is highly likely to make landfall tomorrow evening between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan), near Jakhau Port (Gujarat). It is projected to reach maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph, with gusts of up to 150 kmph. As a result of the cyclone’s influence, coastal areas of Gujarat are expected to experience prolonged rainfall from June 14 to 16, while the border region between Gujarat and Rajasthan may witness very heavy rains from June 16 to 18.
