The Ministry of Science and Technology-owned Technology Development Board (TDB) has collaborated with Remine India Private Limited is ready to set up a commercial e-waste, specifically Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) and e-waste recycling plant using indigenous technology, in Uttrakhand.
The plant will be in Sitarganj, SIIDCUL Industrial Area of Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttrakhand
The Ministry of S&T (Science and Technology) made a statement, “The overall cost of the project is around Rs.15 crore out of which (TBD) Technology Development Board will contribute as financial assistance of Rs.7.5 crore for the project”.
About 2 million tons of e-waste is generated globally among which India is the world’s third largest country in terms of e-waste generation. Currently, only 5% of the total batteries end up in the recycling centres. However, the trajectory of the Lithium-ion battery recycling industry is changing as it has a projected market size of USD 14.89 billion by 2030. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.6% in 2021 with a market size of $3.8 billion.
This cooperative effort between the government is to recycle the e-waste of which India is one of the largest producers, it will also help in connecting informal recyclers with the formal ones, said TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak.
