Operation Kaveri: Nearly 1100 Indians Evacuated from Sudan
Written by Sanjay Kumar
Under Operation Kaveri, nearly 1100 Indians have been evacuated from the conflict-ridden Sudan. The External Affairs Ministry reported that the sixth batch of 128 Indian citizens departed from Sudan, bringing the total number of rescued Indian nationals to almost 1100. The evacuation was conducted via Indian naval ships and IAF aircraft.
The Ministry’s spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, disclosed that an Indian Air Force C-130J flight with 128 passengers on board took off from Port Sudan to Jeddah. Prior to that, nearly 500 stranded Indians were airlifted in two separate batches from Port Sudan to Jeddah. Another IAF C-130J carrying 136 Indian nationals landed in Jeddah from Port Sudan. INS Teg, with 297 passengers, also left Port Sudan.
The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, welcomed the evacuated Indians upon their arrival at Jeddah airport. Yesterday, the first flight carrying 360 Indian nationals evacuated from Sudan reached New Delhi under ‘Operation Kaveri’. Sudan has been embroiled in intense fighting between the army and paramilitary forces.
The Origin of the Sudan Crisis
The Sudan crisis began with a power struggle between two factions of the country’s military regime. This resulted in violent clashes that have claimed the lives of over 250 people, with another 2,600 injured in Khartoum and other cities. The conflict involves the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the main paramilitary force. This has raised the possibility of a civil war breaking out across the country, which would exacerbate an already dire humanitarian situation.
The Key Players in the Sudan Crisis
Since the 2021 coup, Sudan has been under the control of a council of generals. Two military leaders are at the center of the current dispute: Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is effectively the country’s president and head of the armed forces, and his deputy, Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, who leads the RSF paramilitary group. The two generals have differing views on the country’s future direction, particularly regarding the proposed shift toward civilian rule.
The Future of Sudan
The crisis in Sudan has serious implications for the country’s future. The ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF paramilitary group threatens to escalate into a full-blown civil war. The situation has also led to a deterioration in the country’s economic and humanitarian conditions, with widespread violence and instability making it difficult for aid organizations to provide much-needed assistance to the population.
The international community has called for an immediate end to the violence and a return to civilian rule, but it remains to be seen whether the key players in Sudan are willing to compromise and work towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
