Alarming Surge in Covid Cases in India as Daily Infections Exceed 6,000 & Active Cases Reach 28,000
Written by Sanjay Kumar
According to data from the Union Health Ministry updated on Friday (March 7), India has reported another jump in Covid cases with 6,050 cases logged in the past 24 hours. This increase comes after the country reported 5,300 cases the previous day.
As a result, the country’s active Covid-19 caseload has risen to 28,303, an increase of nearly 2,716 cases.
In response to the surge in cases, Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya will chair a review meeting with the health ministers of all states and Union Territories today, as reported by news agency ANI.
Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, MoS Health, stated that the Centre has regularly issued Covid-19 guidelines to the States and UTs, and Prime Minister Modi has held a review with all states. Today, Health Minister Dr. Mandaviya will hold a review meeting with health ministers of states and UTs.
Scientists attribute the present surge in Covid cases to the XBB.1.16 Covid-19 variant. However, they also noted that people in India have developed hybrid immunity through vaccination and natural infection, which should prevent significant hospitalization. Despite this, the government has recommended that people wear masks in crowded places and complete their vaccination doses if they have not already done so.
According to the latest INSACOG bulletin, the newly emerged recombinant coronavirus variant XBB.1.16 has been observed in various parts of the country, accounting for 38.2% of infections to date.
To address potential Covid-related situations, on Wednesday the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Shelly Oberoi, assured the public that the MCD is ready to handle them. She stated that all MCD hospitals have complete Covid-19 facilities, including reserved beds and oxygen cylinders, and are equipped to provide RT-PCR and antigen tests. Meanwhile, the state government in Sikkim has issued an advisory asking people to wear face masks in public places due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in the state and the country.
Experts Share Their Views on XBB.1.16: Is There a Reason for Concern?
According to Dr. Richa Sareen, a pulmonology consultant at Fortis Hospital, the recent surge in Covid cases could be attributed to the new variant. However, XBB.1.16 is a variant of Omicron and therefore not a cause for major concern since most individuals have likely developed antibodies from previous exposure to the Omicron variant during the last wave.
Nevertheless, caution should still be exercised, and individuals should wear masks in crowded areas. Dr. Sareen advises that those who are immunocompromised or have comorbidities should be particularly cautious.
Former AIIMS director, Dr. Randeep Guleria, stated that the recent increase in cases could be due to the XBB.1.16 variant, but there is no need for alarm as long as it does not result in severe illness and fatalities.
