Alliance Air no longer a subsidiary of Air India

In a tweet, India’s national air carrier Air India has announced that Alliance Air is no longer its subsidiary. The news comes months after Tata Sons took over Air India as the government had accepted its winning bid of INR 18,000 crore to acquire 100 percent of the debt-laden state-run carrier.

According to the Air India advisory, passengers who have Air India tickets with a 4-digit flight number beginning with ‘9’ or a 3-digit flight number starting with ‘9I’, must note that these bookings belong to Alliance Air.
Passengers should be aware that beginning April 15, Air India will no longer handle Alliance Air bookings or inquiries.

According to Alliance Air’s website, the company has a fleet of 20 aircraft (18 ATR 72-600 and two HAL Do-228). Through its subsidiary Talace, Tatas owns Air India. The group also manages Air India Express, which also owns a 50% stake in the ground handling subsidiary Air India SATS.
Founded in 1932, Air India is the third airline brand in the Tata Group stable; it owns a majority stake in AirAsia India and a joint venture with Singapore Airlines Ltd called Vistara. Air India currently operates 4,400 domestic and 1,800 international landing and parking slots at domestic airports, as well as 900 slots abroad.
Meanwhile, Alliance Air’s Made-in-India Dornier 228 aircraft was deployed on 12th April for its maiden commercial flight on the Dibrugarh-Pasighat route with Jyotiraditya Scindia (Minister of Civil Aviation) and Kiren Rijiju (Minister of Law and Justice of India) on board. The aircraft, which was built by the central PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), took off from Dibrugarh, Assam, and landed in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district.
Alliance Air, a state-owned carrier, became the country’s first commercial airline to operate an Indian-built plane for civil operations. Dornier 228 planes have only been utilised by the armed forces till now.
