According to a report by the Economic Times, Apple has stated that it requires a ‘concrete reason or a legal requirement’ to comply with the directive from the Centre, which instructs them to remove betting apps from the App Store.
While Apple has not outright refused to comply with the order issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in February, sources mentioned in the Economic Times report have indicated that the company has made it clear that it cannot simply remove the betting apps and make them inaccessible in India without proper justification.
Apple has expressed difficulty in removing the betting apps in India since they are considered valid and legal in other countries. The company has been requested to explore potential methods for implementing the order.
In March, Apple executives and IT officials held a meeting following the release of a list by MeitY, which contained 138 gaming and betting applications that were prohibited from operating in India. As per the Economic Times, Apple is currently in the process of reviewing these apps to ensure that only those engaging in wrongful or undesirable practices are taken down.
As an interim measure, Apple has already taken down some of the apps that were banned by the IT ministry in February. Simultaneously, the company is actively working on finding the most effective solution for dealing with the remaining apps.
In April, the Indian government introduced new regulations for gaming by amending the IT Rules. The objective behind these regulations is to safeguard online gamers from harmful content and addiction. As a part of the new rules, games involving real money wagering or betting have been prohibited.
Following this development, the Ministry officials have once again urged Apple to ensure that no apps facilitating betting or wagering are present on the App Store.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Electronics and IT, has announced the government’s intention to establish multiple self-regulatory organizations (SROs) responsible for approving games that adhere to the country’s operational rules.
