ByteDance has added a Youth Mode to the TikTok app in China, just days after the country adopted new restrictions that limit children under the age of 14 to three hours of video gameplay each week.
All video game companies in China that would provide services to people under the age of 18 are now required to connect to the National Press and Publication Administration’s “anti-addiction” system, which comes into place earlier this month.
ByteDance has established a Youth Mode for TikTok, or Douyin as it is known in China, for youngsters under the age of 14 following the guidelines. Children under the age of 14 need to use the youth mode, which has a daily usage restriction of 40 minutes.
Chinese minors under the age of 14 will be unable to access Douyin between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Additional controls apply to users who have registered their true names and ages, and the company has advised parents to fill out their children’s real details. As per reports, ByteDance has increased the amount of content available on Douyin, including physics, art history, and history, among other subjects.
As the first short video platform to implement minor protection measures, we fully recognize that there will be errors, the company said in a statement. The company has launched a bug-finding campaign to detect security bugs in the login process.
On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, children under the age of 18 will be limited to three hours of online gaming per week, between the hours of 8 and 9 p.m. This effectively prohibits children from playing video games throughout the week. The modifications are intended to preserve children’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Earlier, children under the age of 18 could play up to 90 minutes of online video games every day. China had a 14-year ban on gaming consoles until 2014.
