Written by Sanjay Kumar
According to the most recent bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Mocha is expected to make landfall in West Bengal and Odisha this week.
The weather department has predicted that the cyclone will turn into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining the South Andaman Sea around May 9. Later, it is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 12 and move nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal and adjoining the north Andaman Sea.
IMD Director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that the cyclonic storm will first move towards the central Bay of Bengal in a north-northwest direction till May 11. Afterward, it will re-curve and move north-northeast towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast. On Tuesday, May 9, squally wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, are expected over the southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and adjoining Andaman Sea, as per Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
CYCLONE MOCHA: 5 KEY POINTS
The intensity, path, and impact of the cyclone named ‘Mocha’ have not been predicted by the IMD yet. Weather department officials have stated that ‘Mocha’ is still in its preliminary stage and further information regarding the cyclone will only be made public once it has developed into a strong cyclone.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ is expected to have a lesser impact on Tamil Nadu, as it is projected to move towards the northern direction. The DG has confirmed that no alert has been issued for the Odisha coast, and there is no forecast about the potential impact of the system on Odisha.
The IMD officials have requested people not to panic about the possibility of a cyclone but to remain prepared to face any eventuality.
It is worth noting that the last summer cyclonic storm, ‘Fani,’ had made landfall over the Odisha coast near Puri on May 3, 2019. It had caused widespread devastation in coastal Odisha, including the capital Bhubaneswar.
