Delhi Government Urges Complete Ban on Crackers Across NCR Region in Meeting with Centre
Written by Sanjay Kumar
In a joint meeting held on Friday (October 20), the Delhi government, led by Environment Minister Gopal Rai, appealed to the Union Environment Ministry to impose a comprehensive ban on firecracker burning and the operation of diesel buses throughout the National Capital Region (NCR). The meeting, hosted by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, also included environment ministers from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
Delhi’s proactive efforts to tackle air pollution during the winter season prompted this significant call to action, as it has become increasingly evident that curbing pollution in the NCR region requires a coordinated approach.
Key Proposals and Initiatives:
- Complete Ban on Firecrackers and Stubble Burning: Delhi authorities have strongly recommended that all NCR states enforce a total ban on firecrackers and stubble burning, allowing only Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles to operate.
- Conversion of Industrial Units: The conversion of industrial units in NCR states from polluting fuels to cleaner alternatives, such as piped natural gas, is an essential step to reduce emissions.
- Brick Kilns to Adopt Zig-Zag Technology: The government has proposed that brick kilns in NCR states should adopt zig-zag technology to mitigate pollution.
- Electricity Availability to Housing Societies: Ensuring the availability of electricity to housing societies in NCR states can reduce reliance on diesel generators, a significant source of pollution.
- Redirecting Non-Destined Vehicles: State governments in the NCR region are encouraged to redirect non-destined vehicles from the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways to ease traffic and reduce emissions.
Public Awareness Campaigns:
- ‘Run Against Pollution’ Event: In a bid to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of air pollution and garner public support, the Delhi government organized a ‘Run Against Pollution’ event, which was attended by officials from various government departments.
- ‘Red Light On Gaadi Off’ Campaign: The government plans to reintroduce the ‘Red Light On Gaadi Off’ campaign to combat vehicular pollution by encouraging drivers to turn off their engines at red traffic signals.
- ‘Patakhe Nahi Diye Jalao’ Campaign: Another public awareness campaign, ‘Patakhe Nahi Diye Jalao,’ will be relaunched to discourage the burning of firecrackers.
- Comprehensive Ban on Firecrackers: In line with the last three years’ practice, Delhi had already announced a comprehensive ban on the manufacturing, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers within the capital city last month.
- 15-Point Action Plan: The city government unveiled a 15-point action plan aimed at mitigating air pollution during the winter season, which focuses on addressing dust pollution, vehicular emissions, and the open burning of garbage.
- Air Pollution Hotspots: Specific action plans have been formulated for each of the 13 air pollution hotspots in Delhi, guided by real-time air quality data collected from 40 monitoring stations in the capital.
Delhi remains committed to its efforts to combat air pollution, with a particular focus on improving air quality during the challenging winter months. The collaborative approach with other NCR states underscores the necessity of a unified effort to tackle this critical issue.
