In a spectacular display of royal fashion history, a mesmerizing blue and black Jacques Azagury dress, once adorned by Princess Diana, has set a new record by selling for an astounding $1.1 million at a recent auction. The dress, a symbol of the Princess of Wales’s timeless elegance, was auctioned by Julien’s Auctions, a Los Angeles-based auction house.
Princess Diana first graced the public eye with the ballerina-length evening dress during an appearance in Florence in 1985. The iconic gown garnered further attention when she showcased her prowess as a photographer while wearing it during a visit to Vancouver a year later.
Surpassing all expectations, the evening dress commanded a winning bid that was 11 times its estimated value, making it the highest price ever paid for one of Princess Diana’s gowns at auction, according to reports from Reuters. The total amount, $1,148,080, includes a matching illustration, and the initial estimate for the dress ranged from $100,000 to $200,000.
Julien’s Auctions proudly announced the achievement, stating, “Julien’s now holds the new world record for the most expensive dress worn by Princess Diana sold at auction,” and highlighting that the previous record stood at $604,800.
“The fact that this dress, all these years later, goes for this amount – I think people continue to be in awe of her and her fashion,” commented Elizabeth Holmes, a fashion critic and royal family style expert, to the New York Times. “Diana has remained a fashion icon.”
The iconic dress features a long black velvet bodice adorned with blue stars, complemented by a two-tier blue organza skirt adorned with a sash and bow. Its sale was part of the four-day “Hollywood Legends” auction organized by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), featuring a diverse range of memorabilia.
In addition to the record-breaking dress, another significant piece of Princess Diana’s wardrobe was featured in the auction—a pink chiffon blouse worn for her 1981 engagement portrait to Prince Charles by Lord Snowdon. This blouse, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who also crafted Diana’s iconic wedding dress, fetched an impressive $381,000, surpassing its estimated value of $80,000 – $100,000. The auction highlights the enduring fascination with Princess Diana’s timeless style, making her a continued source of inspiration and admiration in the world of fashion.
