DigiYatra App: Delhi, Bengaluru airports start facial recognition for quicker boarding
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BIAL) have introduced facial recognition systems for domestic passengers. The beta version of Digi Yatra at both airports will process the entry of passengers based on the facial recognition system at all the checkpoints. The 3 checkpoints will be entry to the airports, security check, and boarding gate.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that each passenger would need less than three seconds at each touchpoint, and Digi Yatra would also improve security. Digi Yatra is a project of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and is under trial since 2017.
It was implemented in Delhi’s T3 terminal, which is home to Air Asia India, Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Vistara. The beta version of the Digi Yatra biometric boarding system, according to Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), was tested on customers flying domestically on Vistara & Air Asia flights.
As the Delhi Airport authorities announced, the beta version of the DigiYatra app is currently available at Playstore. The same app will be launched in App Store (for the IOS platform) in a few weeks. It is worth noting that with the introduction of this facility, passengers will get rid of long queues during entry into the terminal. Please note that from now on, the facility is available only for domestic passengers at Terminal 3 of IGI.
BIAL said, “As the passenger journeys through the airport, their travel documents are no longer required as they will be authenticated and verified at every touchpoint by state-of-the-art biometric technology. This process offers the highest degree of safety and security while ensuring stringent standards of privacy. The biometric data is used only for authentication and verification of passengers to assist the boarding process and not for recognition.”
How Digi Yatra works
Entry E-Gate at the airport:
- At the entry point E-Gate the passenger will scan his boarding pass or e-ticket (Print or a soft copy on mobile).
- They look into the Facial Recognition System (FRS) camera installed at E-Gate
- Digi Yatra ID will verify the identity by Face Recognition.
- E-gate opens to allow the passenger into the airport
Entry to Security Hold Area (SHA):
- Passengers arrive at Entry E-gate
- They look into the FRS camera installed on E-Gate
- The system validates passenger’s ID and travel documents
- E-gate will open to allow passengers for security check
