Johnson & Johnson to stop selling its ‘cancer-causing’ talc-based baby powder
Johnson &Johnson will stop selling talc-based baby powder globally in 2023, the drugmaker said on August 11, more than two years after it ended U.S. sales of a product that drew thousands of lawsuits from women.

“As part of a worldwide portfolio assessment, we have made the commercial decision to transition to an all cornstarch-based baby powder portfolio,” it said, adding that cornstarch-based baby powders are already sold in countries around the world.
In 2020, J&J announced that it would stop selling its talc baby powder in the United States and Canada as demand plummeted due to what it called “misinformation” about the product’s safety amid legal challenges. The company faces about 38,000 lawsuits from consumers and survivors claim its talc products caused cancer due to contamination with asbestos, a known carcinogen.
How It Started: In the US, a type of asbestos, chrysotile fiber, was found in this powder, after which it was suspected of cancer. This element is known to cause cancer. Thousands of women sued to allege baby powder caused Cervical cancer. After this, the company stopped selling the powder in the US and Canada in 2020 on the pretext of declining sales.
However, the pharma giant in its statement continued to say that its product was safe even though the sale ended. The company said in a statement that it is moving from talc-based powder to cornstarch-based baby powder. “Our position on the safety of our cosmetic talc remains unchanged. We stand firmly behind decades of independent scientific analysis by medical experts around the world that confirms that talc-based J&J Baby Powder is safe, does not contain asbestos, and it doesn’t cause cancer.”
A 2018 Reuters investigation found that J&J had known for decades that asbestos, a carcinogen, was present in its talc products. Internal company records, trial testimony, and other evidence showed that from at least 1971 to the early 2000s, J&J’sraw talc and finished powders sometimes tested positive for small amounts of asbestos.
The company dealing with the litigants in this way: Johnson & Johnson spun off subsidiary LTL Management in October. J&J put its talc claims on the subsidiary and immediately put it for bankruptcy, stalling pending litigation. Let us tell you that Johnson & Johnson has already paid billions of dollars in compensation to litigants around the world.
