Series of Powerful Earthquakes Strike Southern Philippines, Triggering Tsunami Alerts and Causing Casualties
Written by Sanjay Kumar
A relentless string of powerful earthquakes has jolted the southern Philippines, with the latest event registering a magnitude of 6.9, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic activity, concentrated in the same region, has raised concerns and prompted authorities to issue tsunami warnings.
The most recent quake struck just before 4:00 am local time on Monday, with its epicenter located 72 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan municipality on Mindanao island. The depth of the earthquake was recorded at 30 kilometers (18 miles). This follows a magnitude 6.6 earthquake on Sunday and a devastating magnitude 7.6 quake on Saturday, which tragically claimed at least two lives and left several others injured.
Saturday’s earthquake, which briefly triggered a tsunami alert, sent residents along the east coast of Mindanao into a state of panic. Police Staff Sergeant Joseph Lambo from Hinatuan reported that Sunday evening’s tremors caused further distress, with people rushing out of their homes, vividly recalling the trauma from the previous night.
Hinatuan authorities, including the police, are actively assessing the extent of damage and any potential casualties resulting from the recent seismic activity. Despite the continued aftershocks, there have been no reports of major damage to buildings or infrastructure as of Sunday.
The aftermath of Saturday’s quake claimed the life of a 30-year-old man in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur province, after a wall inside his house collapsed. Additionally, a pregnant woman lost her life in Tagum City, Davao del Norte province, with two individuals suffering minor injuries from falling debris in Tandag City.
The Philippine seismology institute initially issued a “destructive tsunami” warning after the first quake on Saturday, anticipating life-threatening waves. However, no such event occurred, and the warning was subsequently lifted. Small swells were reported as far away as Japan’s eastern Pacific coast, where a brief tsunami warning was also in effect. Palau, situated approximately 900 kilometers off Mindanao, reported no impact.
These seismic events come just two weeks after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Mindanao, resulting in at least nine fatalities and causing structural damage. The Philippines, positioned along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity, though most tremors are too mild to be felt by the population. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as aftershocks persist in the region.
