Guinness World Records estimates that Twitter has approximately 450 million monthly active users. Therefore, the fact that Elon Musk has over 133 million followers means that he has roughly 30% of the total Twitter user base following him.
When Elon Musk took over as CEO of Twitter on October 27, 2022, he had around 110 million followers. In just five months, he has gained more than 3 million followers, averaging over 100,000 new followers per day. At the time of his appointment, he was the third most followed Twitter user after Barack Obama and Justin Bieber.
According to Social Blade, a stats tracker, Obama lost 267,585 followers, and Bieber lost 118,950 over the last 30 days. Meanwhile, Musk gained over 3 million followers during the same period.
Elon Musk’s decision to acquire Twitter resulted in him firing the then CEO, Parag Agrawal, along with other Twitter staff members. In an open letter, Musk explained that he took over Twitter because he believed it was important for civilization’s future to have a common digital town square where people could debate a wide range of beliefs healthily and without resorting to violence.
Since taking over as CEO, Elon Musk has made several changes to Twitter. Recently, the platform announced that it would start removing the legacy verified marks from non-Twitter Blue user accounts from April 1. This move is part of the company’s plan to allow only paid subscribers and members of approved organizations to have verified marks for their accounts.
Twitter now verifies accounts with three colors: Gold for companies, grey for government, and blue for individuals. All verified accounts will be manually authenticated before the checkmark activates.
The blue verification mark is now a feature of Twitter Blue subscription. In India, the subscription is available for a monthly fee of INR 650 on the web and INR 900 on mobile devices.
