Speaking at the summit, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, emphasized that a time would come when there would be “no job needed,” envisioning a future where employment would be reserved for those seeking “personal satisfaction.”
Musk likened AI to a “magic genie” capable of granting any wishes, but he cautioned that fairy tales involving such wishes often have unforeseen consequences. He pondered on one of the challenges of this AI-driven future, questioning how individuals would find meaning in life in a world where work was no longer a necessity.
Expressing his concern, Musk warned about the potential dangers of humanoid robots that could relentlessly pursue humans. He stressed the need for these robots to have a physical off switch, saying, “A humanoid robot can basically chase you anywhere. It’s something we should be quite concerned about. If a robot can follow you anywhere, what if they get a software update one day, and they’re not so friendly anymore?”
In response, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged the widespread depiction of such scenarios in movies where robots are eventually switched off, implying that this issue is not new to the realm of science fiction.
The two-day summit at Bletchley Park concluded with Western governments and leading companies in the “next generation frontier” AI sector reaching an agreement on a new safety testing regime, signaling a collective commitment to addressing the potential risks and ethical considerations associated with advancing AI technologies.
