Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, known for his diverse business ventures and recent takeover of Twitter, has once again captured the spotlight with a peculiar proposal. Musk took to his Twitter account to express his willingness to donate a staggering $1 billion to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, on one condition – that they change their name to “Dickipedia.”
In his tweet, Musk proclaimed, “I will give them a billion dollars if they change their name to Dickipedia,” suggesting that such a change would align with the pursuit of accuracy.
This unexpected offer led to a flurry of responses from Twitter users, @Wikipedia, Do it! You can always change it back after you collect,” the user said. To which, the billionaire replied, “One year minimum. I mean, I’m a not fool lol.”
Musk also shared a screenshot of Wikipedia’s homepage, highlighting the phrases “Wikipedia is not for sale” and “a personal appeal from Jimmy Wales,” and pondered aloud about the Wikimedia Foundation’s substantial financial requests, provoking curiosity about their intended use of funds.
Furthermore, Elon Musk added a playful touch to his engagement with Wikipedia by inquiring if a cow and poop emoji could be incorporated into his Wikipedia page.
The online community’s reaction to Musk’s proposal was swift and varied, with some cautioning about the possibility of Wikipedia coming to collect donations, while others made humorous and insightful remarks about the situation.
Notably, this isn’t the first time Elon Musk has been in the spotlight regarding Wikipedia. Earlier this year, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales criticized Musk for censoring critics of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, before Turkey’s presidential election. Musk’s actions were seen as a departure from supporting free speech, and Wales highlighted Wikipedia’s commitment to defending its principles and battling legal challenges.
Elon Musk’s recent offer to Wikipedia has generated considerable attention, with 9.9 million views and numerous likes, making it another chapter in the colorful life of the tech magnate.
It remains to be seen whether Wikipedia will consider Elon Musk’s generous offer and whether the name “Dickipedia” will ever grace the online encyclopedia’s masthead.
