The heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has caused widespread destruction in the hill state, resulting in cloudbursts, landslides, and floods that have tragically claimed the lives of 108 people so far. The estimated cost of the damage is reported to exceed INR 3,738.28 crore. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert that will remain in effect until July 18.
Out of all the affected states in North India, Himachal Pradesh has been the hardest hit. In response, Union Home Minister Amit has approved the early release of the second installment of the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), amounting to INR 180.40 crore.
The Union home ministry has announced that the Central government has already released the first installment of INR 180.40 crore to Himachal Pradesh from the SDRF on July 10, 2023, specifically for immediate relief measures, as reported by ANI.
To aid in the rescue operations in Himachal Pradesh, a total of 11 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed, equipped with rescue boats and other necessary equipment.
Additionally, one Column of 1 PARA SF and 205 Army Aviation Squadron has been dispatched to Paonta Sahib to assist in civil evacuations. “Two MI-17V5 helicopters have been deployed for the evacuation mission.”
Furthermore, the Central Government has formed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and the relief efforts being carried out by the State Government of Himachal Pradesh. The IMCT is scheduled to commence their field visits on July 17.
According to government officials’ data, a total of 108 people lost their lives in Himachal Pradesh between June 24 and July 14. Out of these, 36 deaths were caused by landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods, while 72 deaths resulted from road accidents, fires, drownings, falls from steep rocks, snake bites, electrocutions, and other causes.
The weather office has predicted heavy rainfall for the next five days in Himachal Pradesh. The IMD has stated, “Heavy to very Heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand and heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh likely to continue during the next five days.”
Meanwhile, the district authority in Kullu has commenced restoration work in the small village of Kasol, where hundreds of people have been stranded due to the havoc caused by the recent rain in the northern state.
The Deputy Commissioner has assured that road connectivity to Kasol, Bhuntar, and Tirthan will be restored by today (July 15). Efforts are also underway to restore mobile connectivity in Sainj through the use of a very small aperture terminal (VSAT).
