In a noteworthy update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is anticipating the landfall of the severe cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ on Tuesday (November 5). The cyclone is expected to affect numerous districts in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, bringing substantial rainfall to the region.
Tamil Nadu:
The Chennai Meteorological Centre predicts that ten districts in Tamil Nadu will experience moderate rainfall on Tuesday morning, along with light thunderstorms and lightning. The Regional Centre highlighted specific districts likely to be affected, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, and Vellore. The cyclone’s current position, as per IMD, is approximately 20 km north-northeast of Nellore, 170 km north of Chennai, 150 km south of Bapatla, and 210 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam.
Andhra Pradesh:
A warning has been issued for districts in Andhra Pradesh, including Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has initiated relief efforts, appointing special officers for all cyclone-affected districts and allocating funds for rescue and relief works. The severe cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall near Bapatla around noon on Tuesday, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour.
Jharkhand:
Certain areas of Jharkhand are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall until December 7 due to the influence of Cyclone ‘Michaung.’ The Meteorological Centre in Ranchi has forecasted light rain in specific pockets on Tuesday, followed by light to moderate showers on December 6 and 7.
Odisha:
While the state government of Odisha has dispatched rescue teams to southern districts as a precautionary measure, the impact is expected to be relatively mild. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra mentioned that the state could witness light to moderate rainfall on Monday night, intensifying into heavy rain on Tuesday. IMD has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in specific locations across the state on December 6.
Overall, authorities are urging residents and stakeholders in the affected regions to stay vigilant, take necessary precautions, and stay updated on the evolving situation.
