India’s first electric double-decker bus arrived to reduce fuel dependence & pollution
Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday (August 18) launched India’s first electric double-decker bus at YB Center in South Mumbai. Named Switch EiV22, the double-decker bus will be run by the Mumbai civic transport body from September.

Switch Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, has unveiled India’s first electric double-decker AC bus called the EiV 22. The Switch EiV 22 is designed, developed, and produced domestically using the brand’s extensive experience with electric buses worldwide.
BEST has awarded a contract to a private company to gradually supply 900 electric buses. By March 2023, 50% of these buses are expected to be delivered, with another 50% arriving thereafter. Mumbai’s public transport provider plans to launch premium app-based public transport in the city.
“The Switch EiV 22 has the most advanced technology, a cutting-edge design, the highest level of safety, and best-in-class comfort features. The renewed iconic double-decker bus is designed to revolutionize public transportation in India and will set new standards in the intra-city bus market,”according to a company statement.
The new electric double-decker bus will be the world’s first – air-conditioned, semi-low floor, electric double-decker with wide doors on the rear overhang and a rear staircase. The double-decker features a lightweight aluminum body construction, which offers higher passenger-to-weight ratio and a competitive cost per km, per passenger.
Unveiling the bus, Nitin Gadkari said that 35 percent of the pollution is due to diesel and petrol and with the arrival of these buses, pollution will come down.
