Railway Ministry clarifies no change in ticket booking rules for children

News of Indian Railways changing its ticket booking policy and demanding full charges for seats for children below the age of 5 years is being reported by several media websites. As per those reports, IRCTC’s ticket booking policies have been amended, according to which passengers with children below 5 years will have to pay full fare for booking tickets. However, Indian Railways has termed all such claims of media houses as ‘misleading’.

It is informed that Indian Railways has not made any changes regarding the booking of tickets for children traveling on the train, it clarified. “On the demand of passengers, they have been given the option to buy tickets and book a berth for their child below 5 years of age. And if they don’t want separate berths, it is free, as it used to be,” the clarification added.
No changes in rule
The Ministry of Railways announced that children under the age of five will be permitted to travel for free in a circular dated March 6, 2020. However, no separate berth or seat will be provided which makes it unnecessary to purchase a ticket. However, if a parent voluntarily wants a full berth or seat for their children under the age of 5, the full adult fare will be charged.
“These news items and media reports are misleading. It is informed that Indian Railways has not introduced any changes with regards to booking of tickets for children traveling in the train.”
- Age 0-4 years: Free of cost for children if you choose Infant berth/ Infant with no berth depending on the train.
- Age 5-11 years: Half price if you select a child seat without a berth, full charge if you select the whole berth,
- Age 12 years onwards: Full charge for everyone
