India’s G20 Presidency: A Year of Extraordinary Achievements, Says PM Modi
Written by Sanjay Kumar
In a recent opinion piece published across various newspapers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significant accomplishments of India during its G20 presidency. Emphasizing India’s commitment to revitalizing multilateralism, amplifying the voice of the Global South, championing development, and promoting women’s empowerment, PM Modi expressed confidence that the initiatives undertaken will resonate for years to come.
As Brazil prepares to take over the G20 presidency from December 1, PM Modi reflected on India’s inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive approach, as evidenced by the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration (NDLD) by all G20 members.
Reflecting on the challenges faced globally during the past year, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate threats, financial instability, and debt distress in developing nations, PM Modi emphasized the need to “reflect, recommit, and rejuvenate the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.'”
India’s G20 presidency sought to offer an alternative to the status quo, shifting from GDP-centric to human-centric progress. PM Modi highlighted the importance of focusing on what unites nations rather than what divides them, calling for a fundamental reform of multilateralism.
The ‘Voice of the Global South Summit,’ initiated by India, marked a new era for multilateralism, mainstreaming the concerns of developing countries in the international discourse. PM Modi proudly stated that India has ushered in a time where developing nations rightfully take their place in shaping the global narrative.
India’s domestic approach to the G20 was marked by inclusivity, making it a “People’s Presidency” befitting the world’s largest democracy. The G20 2023 Action Plan to Accelerate Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was delivered at the critical midpoint of the 2030 agenda, addressing issues such as health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.
A key driver of this progress is the robust Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), with PM Modi highlighting the completion of the Digital Public Infrastructure Repository. Featuring over 50 DPIs from 16 countries, this repository aims to facilitate global technological collaboration and unlock the power of inclusive growth.
The leaders’ declaration underscored India’s commitment to climate justice and equity, urging substantial financial and technological support from the Global North. Recognizing the monumental resources required, the G20 emphasized the importance of better, larger, and more effective Multilateral Development Banks.
India’s role in UN reforms, particularly in restructuring principal organs like the UN Security Council, was acknowledged by PM Modi. Gender equality took center stage, culminating in the formation of a dedicated Working Group on the Empowerment of Women in the coming year.
Addressing geopolitical issues, PM Modi emphasized a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and the senseless killing of civilians. He reiterated the importance of embodying humanitarianism over hostility, emphasizing that this is not an era of war.
As India passes the baton to Brazil, PM Modi expressed confidence that the collective steps taken during its G20 presidency will have a lasting impact on people, planet, peace, and prosperity worldwide.
