With MS Dhoni at the helm, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have clinched their record-equaling 5th IPL title, propelling them to become the most valued IPL franchise. The IPL 2023 witnessed unprecedented viewership on Star Sports and JioCinema, propelling the league to new heights, as indicated by a report from investment banking company Houlihan Lokey, which estimates its value at $3.2 billion.
MS Dhoni’s influence has been instrumental in the growth of CSK. His immense popularity has garnered a devoted fan following across the nation, resulting in packed stadiums for every CSK match. Leveraging his star power, CSK has been able to command higher sponsorship fees compared to other franchises.
Chennai Super Kings, whose brand value was previously valued at $146 million, has now surpassed the $200 million milestone, reaching a remarkable $212 million. This represents a staggering year-on-year growth of 45.2%. Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore secures the second position with a valuation of $195 million, while the Mumbai Indians have slipped to third with a valuation of $190 million.
Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings achieved an impressive feat by reaching their 10th IPL final in just 14 seasons, ultimately securing their 5th title. In the record-breaking IPL Final of 2023, CSK emerged victorious by defeating the Gujarat Titans with 5 wickets to spare.
The IPL brand value has skyrocketed to $3.2 billion, positioning it as one of the most valuable sporting brands globally. This surge can be attributed to the record-breaking IPL Media Rights deal secured by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), amounting to INR 48,390 crore ($6.2 billion). Consequently, the IPL brand value experienced an 80% surge from $1.8 billion, while the overall valuation of the IPL business enterprise rose by 80% to reach $8.5 billion.
“Created on the American style of franchise-based systems of hiring players, the IPL has established itself as a hugely lucrative sports league, along similar lines as the NFL and the NBA,” Harsh Talikoti, Senior Vice President, of Corporate Valuation Advisory Services at Houlihan Lokey, said.
In terms of broadcasting fees, the IPL is second only to the NFL (National Football League of the US) which charges $35.1 million. The per match fee of IPL is $14.4 million.
