In a significant development, the inaugural flight of ‘Operation Ajay’ successfully repatriated 212 Indians who were stranded in Israel due to the ongoing conflict. The flight touched down in New Delhi today (October 13), marking a moment of relief for those who had been unable to return home after Air India suspended its commercial operations on the day the hostilities erupted on October 7.
The Indian government took the commendable step of covering the flight expenses for these citizens, ensuring their safe return. At the airport in Tel Aviv, a sizable crowd, including many students, eagerly awaited their chance to board the special flight arranged under ‘Operation Ajay’.
One of the relieved passengers, Shubham Kumar, a student in Israel, expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are thankful to India… Most of the students were a little bit panicked. Suddenly we saw some notification and the links for every Indian citizen through the embassy of India, which boosted our morale. We felt like the embassy of India is connected with us, which was a kind of relief to us. And then we got all the arrangements.” The operation has undoubtedly offered solace to many anxious individuals.
The backdrop of this evacuation is the heightened tension between Israel and the Hamas group in the Gaza Strip. Israel initiated an unprecedented offensive after Hamas fighters breached the border fence and infiltrated the country through air, land, and sea on October 7. The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides, with the Israeli military reporting more than 1,300 casualties, including 222 soldiers – a toll not seen since the 1973 war with Egypt and Syria.
In the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, at least 1,417 people, including women and children, have tragically lost their lives, as per local authorities. The situation remains volatile, and efforts to bring Indian citizens back home are ongoing.
The Indian embassy, in collaboration with ‘Operation Ajay’, has been working diligently to coordinate the safe return of its citizens. They have begun by reaching out to the first batch of registered Indian citizens, and messages for subsequent flights are expected to follow. This humanitarian endeavor is a testament to the Indian government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens in times of crisis.
