The Role of IoT in Smart Cities: Building Sustainable Urban Ecosystems
The modern society is fed by data, IoT and ICT which optimises the resource by integrating urban areas. It collects various data based on infrastructure and services which are then connected to an administration system reflecting the demand of the user.
The concept of smart city is the system of systems in which ICTs are integrated into a management system in which information is passed using Internet type network. Various interfaces can be accessed through fixed terminals.
A smart city develops social and technological infrastructures in order to attract and satisfy individuals. Service delivery, institutional change and quality of life are the key performance indicators of a smart city. It promotes eco friendly urban environments with a smart waste management and noiseless neighbourhoods. Smart cities can be set as the interdisciplinary applications of information and communication technologies leading to urban planning, designs and construction.
The technological construction of smart cities encompasses communication grids and data nets, sensing and actuating technologies, intelligent infrastructures. Broadband, Wi-Fi, parallel and biological networks, Wireless, intelligent highways, grids and buildings, micro electromechanical devices and nano constructors are the refinements of such constructs. They are quite essential to smart urban regions in order to connect various communities, public schools and innovation parks which are essential in the building blocks for societies.
Smart city is an amalgamation of software solutions and services, which aims to manage its infrastructures in a sustainable and secured manner. Smart cities are committed to the fusion and continuous creation of innovative solutions which merge with digital and real world. Such solutions embrace systems which rules the complex infrastructure of a city. It includes the integration of cities services at all level, ease of its use from anywhere and at any point of time, standard open interfaces which allows diversity services and products, technologies permitting fast use and sustainable growth in the digitalised society.
Internet of Things in urban environment
The Internet of Things (IoT) play a crucial role in enabling the smart and intelligent environment. In the modern world, it can be seen as an enabling technology which integrates various heterogeneous devices and moving towards a digital city. In Urban environment, communication is done using a multi micro service cloud infrastructure which co creates IoT PaaS of urban intelligence. IoT is affecting urban environment in a deep and deterministic way by creating innovative platforms containing the tools and information models. Many countries are initiating programs and discussion towards the policies about smart cities and IoT and its populated urban environment.
Benefits of implementation of IoT in Smart Cities
Over the past 100 years, the daily movement of people has changed significantly. Our civilization has been urbanised globally. A major part of population used to live in rural environment. But things have changed so far as urban cities are heavily populated. It is estimated that by 2050, smart city of global population will have some activity in an urban centre. The increasing density of cities has led to areas being exposed to phenomena such as river floods and landslides. Such factors have prompted the activation of information systems on the risk and analysis of these processes. With the collaboration of information technologies, various environmental hazards can be addressed with promotion of sustainable development.
Government is working on combining smart cities with the social responsibility of the developed economy. Many countries are relying on innovation to transform cities into intelligent environment which offers high quality of life to population as well as sustainable environment and economy. The IoT is playing a major role in such revolution. It is able to gain significant attention because it has the ability to enter connect physical devices which allows the linkage of multiple computer systems. The main motto of implementation of IoT technologies is the improvement of quality of life by enabling continuous communication between objects.
Challenges and risk of Internet of Things in smart cities
- Privacy is the major challenge in the implementation off IoT in urban environment. The digital devices collect sensitive data and transfer it to possibly some unsafe environment. Though the data is protected through encryption but you never know who is using this data.
- High number of IoT devices and its capacity to control any loop holes may increase traffic jams instead of solving or reducing them. In the initial stage, even surveillance increases safety but the sheer number of underway surveillance application may reduce safety and drive traffic congestion.
- Energy consumption is a critical problem as number of IoT devices will expand.
Conclusion
The implementation of Internet of Things in smart cities truly represents a transformative approach towards the Urban Development which addresses various critical issues such as sustainability, efficiency and quality of life. Through the strategic implementation of Internet of Things, urban cities can optimise the use of resource, reducing environmental impact and improve service delivery. Despite the challenges, the integration of IoT in urban environment offers promising solution in order to create sustainable and resilient cities which can lead to rapid urbanization and technological advancements.
