“We now prioritize expanding and increasing flight operations to India to serve the rise in demand for both leisure and business travel,” VietJet Vice President Nguyen Thanh Son said. Currently, the airline runs four routes between Vietnam and India, connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with New Delhi and Mumbai.
As part of its fleet expansion strategy, VietJet, which currently has a fleet of 80 Airbus aircraft operating on about 100 routes, intends to increase the number of A330 widebody aircraft. The airline, which currently has two A330 aircraft on lease, said it intends to increase the number to at least 10, but did not give a time frame.
Additionally, the Vietnamese airline said last week that by early November of this year, its flight services will connect five Indian cities to Vietnam. Currently, Mumbai and Delhi are part of the southeast Asian airline’s international network. VietJet has been flying to India since December 2019 when it started services to Delhi from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
Following India’s suspension of all commercial international passenger flight operations in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in late March 2020, the budget carrier’s services were discontinued. After the Indian government lifted the ban on March 27 this year, VietJet announced the expansion of its services between the two countries as well as the resumption of operations.
