According to reports, WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta Platforms, has launched a new tool that allows iOS users to copy text from images. However, there is a catch: the feature only works on iPhones that have iOS 16 installed, as it uses iOS 16’s APIs.
To use this feature, users need to open the WhatsApp app and select an image that contains text. The feature uses the iPhone camera to recognize text and then allows users to copy it. However, the feature will not work with images set to “view once” for security reasons.
Things you should know about WhatsApp’s text detection feature
Users can now extract text from images shared on WhatsApp with a new feature that has been added. Once the feature is accessible, users can open any image containing text and find a button that allows them to copy the text.
It should be noted that this feature is only available on iOS 16, as WhatsApp utilizes iOS 16 APIs to detect text within images. Furthermore, the feature cannot be used with view once images, which adds an extra layer of privacy to these types of images.
In addition to this text recognition feature, iOS users can also take advantage of two other new features on WhatsApp. One tool allows users to turn images into stickers, while the other enables users to set voice notes as status. Voice notes can be up to 30 seconds long, and users can even set forwarded voice notes as their status.
