Xiaomi overtakes Samsung to become world’s number 1 smartphone brand
In June, Xiaomi beat Samsung and Apple to become the world’s number one smartphone brand for the first time, according to a Counterpoint Research report released on August 5th. Xiaomi’s sales increased by 26% month over month in June, making it the month’s fastest-growing brand.
The most recent Counterpoint study made this claim. Xiaomi has long been the market leader in India, and it had a fantastic June quarter this year, first overtaking Samsung in Europe and then surpassing the South Korean electronics giant internationally in June.
This is the first time Xiaomi has risen to the top of the smartphone manufacturer rankings. When the full quarter is evaluated, however, it is still behind Samsung in second place.
According to Counterpoint Research’s Monthly Market Pulse Service, Xiaomi was the number two brand internationally in terms of sales in Q2 2021 and has sold close to 800 million handsets since its debut in 2011.
Xiaomi has been making consistent and strong attempts to fill the gap caused by Huawei’s downfall since the beginning. According to Research Director Tarun Pathak, the OEM has been expanding in Huawei and HONOR’s legacy markets such as China, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Xiaomi was aided even more in June by the recovery in China, Europe, and India, as well as Samsung’s drop due to supply difficulties, he said. The 618-festival increased China’s market by 16% month over month in June.
According to Senior Analyst Varun Mishra, who commented on the China market and Samsung supply problems, Xiaomi was the fastest growing OEM, thanks to its aggressive offline growth in lower-tier cities and good performance of the Redmi 9, Redmi Note 9, and Redmi K series.
At the same time, Samsung’s manufacturing was disrupted in June owing to a new wave of Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam, causing device shortages across all channels.
Xiaomi, with its excellent mid-range portfolio and wide market coverage, benefited the most from Samsung’s A series’ short-term gap, according to Mishra.
