Social media giant Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is considering launching a paid subscription service in Europe, offering an ad-free experience to users. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Meta is contemplating charging European users approximately $14 per month for this premium offering.
Meta has already communicated this plan to privacy regulators in Ireland, digital competition regulators in Brussels, and EU privacy regulators. The move comes in the wake of Meta’s recent designation as a ‘gatekeeper’ under the EU’s new Digital Markets Act, a regulation aimed at curbing the power of tech giants and protecting user data privacy.
Under this proposed subscription model, European users could opt to pay around 10 euros or $10.46 per month for an ad-free experience on either Facebook or Instagram when accessed via desktop. An additional fee of approximately 6 euros would be levied for each additional account. On mobile devices, the subscription price would increase to approximately 13 euros per month due to commissions imposed by Apple’s and Google’s app stores on in-app payments.
Meta intends to roll out this subscription plan, referred to as the “subscription no ads” (SNA) plan, in the coming months. Users will have the choice of either continuing to access Facebook and Instagram with personalized ads or opting for the ad-free experience by subscribing. However, it remains uncertain whether Irish or Brussels regulators will find Meta’s SNA plan compliant with EU regulations.
In response to these developments, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company believes in providing free services supported by personalized ads but is open to exploring options to meet evolving regulatory requirements.
As of the first half of 2023, Meta reported approximately 258 million monthly Facebook users and 257 million monthly Instagram users.
These developments highlight Meta’s efforts to adapt to changing regulatory landscapes while offering users an alternative to ad-supported platforms.
