Mundra Port Achieves Record-Breaking Cargo Handling Milestone
Written by Sanjay Kumar
In a significant achievement, Mundra Port, operated by the Adani Group, has become India’s first port to handle a staggering 16.1 million tonnes of cargo in the month of October. This remarkable feat solidifies Mundra Port’s status as the nation’s leading port, setting new benchmarks for the maritime industry.
Mundra Port, India’s largest port, has been on a trajectory of consistent growth, with an impressive year-on-year growth of 9%. The port has already handled 102 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo this year, crossing the 100 MMT mark in a mere 210 days, surpassing the record of 231 days set in the previous year.
The port’s remarkable success extends to various cargo types. According to the conglomerate’s press release, Mundra Port witnessed double-digit year-on-year growth in containers and liquids and gas.
In a display of remarkable efficiency, the port achieved another milestone by handling 4.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in just 203 days, outpacing the previous year’s achievement, which took 225 days.
Mundra Port’s continued expansion and adaptability are evident in its inclusion of new cargo types such as Hydrolysis Pi Gas (HPG) to its portfolio, further enhancing its offerings and meeting the evolving needs of the shipping industry.
With a strategic location and deep draft capabilities, Mundra Port is well-equipped to handle large vessels. In July 2023, the port berthed the MV MSC Hamburg, one of the largest ships ever to dock at an Indian port. The vessel, measuring 399 meters in length and 54 meters in width, had a carrying capacity of 15,908 TEUs.
This is not the first time Mundra Port has accommodated large vessels. In 2021, it welcomed the APL Raffles, a Singapore-registered vessel, which was the largest container vessel to call at any Indian port at that time, measuring 397.88 meters in length and 51 meters in width.
Mundra Port’s strong connectivity to the hinterland, particularly to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), has played a crucial role in its growth.
With the port’s consistent cargo volume growth rate, it has set its sights on an ambitious target of handling 200 MMT of cargo by the fiscal year 2025.
Mundra Port’s achievements are not only a testament to its operational excellence but also a reflection of India’s growing significance in the global maritime industry. The port’s continued success is expected to boost trade and logistics in the region, further solidifying its position as a critical gateway for international commerce.
