Seismic Alarm in Nepal: Scientists Raise Concerns about Massive Earthquakes
Nepal – Following the recent 5.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Nepal, scientists have issued a grave warning of more powerful earthquakes on the horizon. The nation, still reeling from the traumatic 2015 earthquake that claimed the lives of around 9,000 people, faces the looming threat of seismic upheavals exceeding 8.0 on the Richter scale.
According to experts, the earthquake on November 5th was the latest in a series of tremors that have been rattling Nepal since the catastrophic 2015 event. The Times of India reported that scientists believe Sunday’s earthquake did not alleviate all the accumulated stress in the region, leaving Nepal vulnerable to another substantial earthquake in the near future.
Dr. Amod Dixit, a respected seismologist and the executive director of the National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET), pointed out that the recent quake originated in the central belt of Nepal, an area known for its active energy release. This seismic activity results from the constant collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, generating immense strain in the Earth’s crust.
Dixit further explained that while the latest quake affected the eastern and western regions of Nepal, it did not release all the accumulated strain from the central belt. He estimates that a significant amount of strain remains, capable of generating another earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or higher at any time.
Since the beginning of 2023, Nepal has experienced a staggering 70 earthquakes. Just days after the 5.4 magnitude event, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake rattled the region, with its tremors felt as far as New Delhi, India.
The initial earthquake this week, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, struck on Friday, according to Nepal’s National Seismological Centre. However, the German Research Centre for Geosciences downgraded it to 5.7, while the US Geological Survey reported it as 5.6.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, officials in Jajarkot, located around 500 km (300 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, fear that the death toll may rise. Communications have been severed in the hilly region near the earthquake’s epicenter, making it difficult to assess the extent of the damage. The district, with a population of 190,000, is dotted with remote hillside villages.
Local media outlets have shown images of multi-story brick buildings with crumbled facades and scattered furniture. Videos posted on social media captured the chaos as people rushed into the streets, evacuating buildings in the midst of the tremors.
Nepal remains on high alert as it grapples with the growing seismic activity, hoping to mitigate the potential devastation of future earthquakes while providing aid to those affected by the recent tremors.
