As per the ILO (International Labour Organisation), unemployment and underemployment have been on rise since 2019, and in 2022 unemployment rate has increased nearly threefold. According to the ILO Employment Report 2022 83% of jobless people are Youth.

Unemployment among the youth has increased over the past two decades, a whopping threefold jump from 5.7% in 2000 to 17.5% in 2019. Unemployment rate in urban areas was much higher than that of rural areas, and among this Female unemployment was much higher as compared to men in 2019, though they will have fallen to the same levels in 2022.
Among the unemployed youth educated are worst affected with the highest rate of unemployment, unemployment is seen increasing with the level of education, youth with graduation or higher degree have the highest rate of unemployment. Than those who are illiterate. In 2022 people with secondary education or higher had 18.4% of unemployment, graduates had nine times higher unemployment of 29.1% than the secondary school qualified individuals, and the people who cannot read or write had an unemployment level of 3.4%.
